Read about its history, seed, plant description, and its Benefits for Health.

  • Nigella sativa, also known as black seed or black cumin, is an annual flowering plant that is native to south and southwest Asia. It has been grown for centuries in different parts of the world, including India, where it is widely used in Ayurveda to treat nervous system disorders and digestive ailments. At Lineark Global, we specialize in the manufacturing, processing, trading, and export of spices, including Nigella Sativa, which we procure and process from the heart of spice nation Unjha, Gujarat.

  • Nigella Sativa has a long history of use in traditional medicine, and it is known for its highly potent properties that can have extremely good effects on a person’s health and well-being. It has been used to treat a variety of health conditions, including asthma, hay fever, diabetes, high blood pressure, eczema, weight loss, and menstrual cramps, among others. The black cumin seed oil, extracted from the seeds of the Nigella sativa plant, has been found to have a wide range of health benefits. It is believed that the active compounds found in black cumin seed oil, including thymoquinone, may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

  • Nigella sativa is an annual flowering plant. It grows to 20–30 cm (7.9–11.8 inch) tall and has linear lanceolate leaves. Plants can reach about 60 cm (2 feet) in height. It can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. The delicate flowers have 5-10 petals, and the colors are usually yellow, white, pink, pale blue or pale purple. The fruit of plant is large and inflated capsule composed of 3-7 united follicles, that each of them has numerous seeds. The black-colored seeds are flattened, oblong and angular, funnel shaped, with the length of 0.2 cm and 0.1 cm wide. This plant is known by numerous names, for example black cumin (English), black caraway seeds (USA), shonaiz (Persian) and kalajira (Bangali) Black cumin thrives in sandy, loamy, or even heavy clay soil of any pH as long as there is adequate drainage.

  • In addition to its many health benefits, Nigella Sativa has a pungent bitter taste and a faint smell of strawberries, making it a popular ingredient in candies and liquors. It is also used in a variety of naan bread called Peshawari naan, which is usually topped with kalonji seeds. Black cumin seeds are also used as a flavoring agent in a variety of dishes, particularly in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. They are often used to flavor bread, curries, pickles, and desserts.
