Green Cardamom

Botanical Name: Elettaria cardamomum

Read about its history, seed, plant description, and its Benefits for Health.

  • Green cardamom, also known as “Ceylon cardamom” or “true cardamom,” is a valuable spice crop that originates from the seeds of various plants in the ginger family. This spice is native to Southern India, where it grows abundantly in the Western Ghats region, also known as the Cardamom Hills.

  • Cardamom has a rich history, dating back at least 4000 years. Ancient Egyptians used it for medicinal purposes, as part of rituals and even for embalming. The spice was also used as a prime ingredient for the preparation of oils that were applied during the mummification process. The mentioning of aromatic oils in the Bible is even considered to be prepared with the base as cardamom.
  • Green cardamom has a warm, eucalyptus-like floral and citrusy flavor and aroma, and it is widely used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. The plant has underground stems with leafy roots, large white or pale green leaves, pale green fruits and black seeds. Apart from using the entire pod as a flavoring, its black seeds powdered and the outer covering are also used.
  • This spice is versatile in use, and it is commonly used in both sweet and savory dishes. In Indian cuisine, cardamom powder is often “bloomed” in hot oil either alone or with other spices to bring out the flavor and intensity of the spice prior to adding other ingredients. It is a common feature in curries and rice dishes. Cardamom is found in Dutch and Scandinavian style cookies, cakes, and pastries. It pairs well with poultry, fish, and pulses, as well as beverages such as tea and coffee.

  • Green cardamom is one of the world’s most expensive spices by weight, but its strong flavor means that a little goes a long way. This spice is also used in sausage making throughout Europe and the United States. It is often used whole or in ground form and is a primary ingredient in masala chai. In fact, it ranks higher than cinnamon for usage in the Scandinavian region’s cuisine.

  • Overall, green cardamom is a valuable and versatile spice with a long history and wide range of uses. Its unique flavor and aroma make it a sought-after ingredient in many cuisines around the world
